Our 2025 event programme kicked-off in Madrid with the hugely popular Burns Night Supper.
In its third year the much moved evening was celebrated on the day of Robert Burns’ birthday – 25 January. The evening followed traditions which have shaped Burns night across Scotland and beyond for 200+ years.
As the evening’s focus is celebrating the poetry of Scotland’s much loved famous bard Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns there were poetry readings a plenty. The ‘great chieftain’, Scotland’s national dish, was ceremonially presented to the sound of bagpipes and a reading of ‘address to a haggis’, and toasts to ‘the laddies’, and ‘ladies’ were also made.
The supper’s fayre was also traditional, with evening sponsor’s Macduff whetting the diner’s appetite with details of their langoustine or ciglas starter, freshly caught from Scottish waters. Scottish butchers Crombie’s had been hand-picked for their award-winning reputation of creating the finest infamous ‘pudding’ for the supper’s main course, of course served with ‘neeps and ‘tatties. Whisky was plentiful, including within the evening’s cheesecake dessert, despite diners having already been encouraged to add a generous drop of Glenfiddich to their haggis. Adding a glass or two of Spain to our BritishSpanish evening in Madrid’s Melia Princesa was family run, Familia Torres, who provided wine for the evening. Our final sponsor Walker’s added a final sweet touch to the evening, with their buttery shortbread. Whether you were won over by the haggis or not, our guests certainly experienced the complete burns night supper experience.
The evening ended with a brief dance class and much giggling as the ceilidh got underway to the sound of more bagpipes. There was only one suitable way to call and end to the evening’s fun, a group sing-a-long of Auld Lang Syne!
