Few countries have been transformed as much politically, economically and socially as Spain since the end of the Franco dictatorship in 1975. But it faces a host of challenges including the disruptive push for independence in Catalonia against a backdrop of a polarised and fragmented political system, relatively high unemployment, over tourism, a defective
education system and the impact of climate change. Governing the country has become increasingly complex.
Leading the evening’s lecture will be William Chislett, Emeritus Senior Research Fellow at the Elcano Royal Institute. He covered Spain’s transition to democracy for The Times of London between 1975 and 1978. He was then based in Mexico City for the Financial Times between 1978 and 1984. He returned to Madrid on a permanent basis in 1986 and since then, among other things, has written 20 books on various countries.
There is no charge for this member only event, but donations to the scholarship programme are very much appreciated.
Please note that as this event is run in collaboration with The Instituto Cervantes your name and email address will be shared with them for the purposes of this event only.
