We were joined at the Spanish Embassy in London by author, and serving British Army Officer with the Royal Engineers, Séan Scullion in conversation with BSS member Geoff Cowling, a former HM Consul General (Barcelona), following the launch of Scullion’s book ‘Churchill’s Spaniards’.
Churchill’s Spaniards tells the little known story of approx. 1200 Spanish soldiers who joined the British Army to fight in WWII. We heard snippets of the intricate stories told in the book of the individuals, from all corners of Spain, not just about the manoeuvres they were involved in, but their personal stories, covering their lives before joining the British Army and the post-war difficulties they faced. We heard the story of one man who worked as a chauffeur for General Franco, of the difficulties post-war for many of those wishing to remain in Britain, and the stories of love, friendship and family.
BritishSpanish Society members were joined in the audience by many relatives of those featured in the book. Sullion thanked those family members present for allowing him to tell the story, assisting him in his research and giving the men behind the stories a voice.
You can read more about the book in edition 263 of La Revista.
Churchill’s Spaniards is available to buy from publisher Helion & Company and in most book stores.
