Professor Ben Bollig will be The Anglo-Argentine’s guest lecturer for the 27th Borges Lecture. The lecture will focus on the legacy of Jorge Luis Borges for contemporary writers, and in particular his presence in the plays of one of Argentina’s most singular dramatists, the writer, director, and actor for stage and screen, Rafael Spregelburd. He will outline the continuing importance of Borges for Argentine writers; how he is present in Spregelburd’s work; and what the latter does with this legacy, in particular in a remarkable recent play, Inferno, which draws not only on Borges’ fiction and critical writings, but also on the painting of Hieronymus Bosch and the poetry of Dante.
Ben Bollig is Professor of Latin American Literature and Film at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of St Catherine’s College. His recent books include Moving Verses, a study of the cinematic adaptation of poetry in Argentina, and Politics and Public Space in Contemporary Argentine Poetry: The Lyric and the State. He co-edited Latin American Cultural Studies: A Reader. He has translated the poetry of Cristian Aliaga, Andi Nachon, Sergio Raimondi, and many others, for publication in English. He is currently preparing a book on tenderness in Latin American literature and film. Professor Bollig is an editor of Journal of Latin American Cultural Studies and a trustee of the Modern Humanities Research Association.
