***SOLD OUT*** Architecture in Painting:
Since the invention of perspective is linked to architecture, we will look at Renaissance paintings that celebrate perspective through complex depictions of buildings. We will also discuss the role played by detailed architectural backgrounds in religious scenes, in 17th century fantasy classical cities, and in austere Dutch paintings of churches.
Dutch domestic scenes of ordinary courtyards will be examined to reveal the relationship between subject, technique and message. The transformation of buildings through light and weather in 19th century paintings are also great examples of the paradox of hazy visions and solid architecture.
Examples will be chosen from across the collection.
Our guide for the tour is Dido Powell, an experienced teacher of History of Art in London, teaching in colleges and giving gallery tours, she is also a painter who exhibits in London.
She brings her insights as a practicing artist to her explorations of paintings and sculpture to draw attention to the methods used by artists to convey ideas, beliefs, emotions, individuality and to reflect the times they live in.
