Your chance to enjoy Stonyhurst College and the Jesuit Treasures
This is an exclusive guided visit during half term to Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, the world’s oldest continuous Jesuit school and now one of England’s leading Catholic school with over 700 students on campus across two schools.
On Saturday 10th April there will be a tour of the Jesuit archives by curator, Dr Jan Graffius, including one of six existing Shakespeare First Folios, Mary Queen of Scots’ prayer book, Thomas Moore’s hat, 17th century Wintour vestments and 10th century manuscripts.
There will be a tour of the College housed in the second largest building under one roof in the country next to Hampton Court. The buildings are reputedly the inspiration for eminent alumnus Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Baskerville Hall and are often referred to by current students as Hogwarts! The name of Sherlock Holmes’ arch enemy, Moriarty, is engraved indelibly into one of the old school desks.
In the old school refectory you will see the table on which Oliver Cromwell slept and portraits of the seven alumni recipients of the Victoria Cross.
After dinner on Saturday evening there will be a talk by alumni Jimmy Burns and David Hurst and the following day, after mass in the school church, there will be an optional walk around the estate offering views across the Ribble Valley towards Pendle Hill, site of the famed witch trials of 1612.
Lovers of English Catholic history and impressive country estates will enjoy this trip.
