We are thrilled to announce that, with the kind support of Allen & Overy, the exciting young Spanish cellist Laura Peribáñez Artero, a current BritishSpanish Society becaria studying at the Royal College of Music with a Sabadell Foundation scholarship, and pianist Domonkos Csabay will perform three pieces of music exclusively for the members and friends of the BSS by livestream from the 1901 Arts Club in London’s South Bank on 24th June at 6.30 pm.
The programme will be as follows:
– Huguet i Tagell, Suite Espagnole Nº1
– Nadia Boulanger, 3 Pièces pour violoncelle et piano
– Ástor Piazzolla, Le Grand Tango
We believe that this event will mark the first UK live performance of renowned Catalan composer Huguet i Tagell’s Suite Espagnole Nº1 – which, as the BritishSpanish Society, we are very proud to premier!
As 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the great Argentine Ástor Piazzolla’s birth, Laura and Domonkos will also play his seminal piece Le Grand Tango, as well as a beautiful work by the influential French composer, conductor and teacher Nadia Boulanger called 3 Pièces pour violoncelle et piano. Among many other students, including Philip Glass and Aaron Copeland, Boulanger also taught Piazzolla.
In the course of the evening, Laura will talk to us about life as a musician and a student, not least the challenges posed to performers in a time of COVID, as well as walking those of us less familiar with Huguet i Tagell, Boulanger and Piazzola through the pieces she and Domonkos will play for us.
We are very excited to have these two young artists performing and playing these fascinating pieces exclusively for the BSS, and greatly hope that you are able to join us on the 24th June to hear this beautiful music performed live.
Laura Peribáñez is quickly gaining recognition as one of the most exciting and versatile Spanish musicians of her generation.
Growing up in Barcelona, she made her concert debut at l´Auditori de Barcelona at the age of 9 and has since performed extensively across Spain and Europe in festivals such as Aurora Chamber Music Festival in Sweden, ICMC Schloss Weikersheim in Germany and the Cello Biënnale Amsterdam.
Recent highlights include performances and recordings for Decca, ECM Records and Classic FM in London and concerts in Flagey (Brussels), Musical Instruments Museum (Brussels), White Piano Hall (Vilnius), DeSingel (Antwerp) and Theater aan het Vrijhof Maastricht. In Spain, Laura Peribáñez is a frequent guest at venues such as Palau de la Música Catalana (Barcelona) and Auditorio de Zaragoza. She has recently performed in the Palace of Nations in Geneva and has filmed and performed in the new institutional video of the Government of Catalunya.
She has collaborated with and received guidance from the Casals Quartet, Frans Helmerson, Gary Hoffman, Ferenc Rados, Heime Müller and Gordan Nikolic amongst others. In February 2020 she won the Bärenreiter – Urtext prize of the JM Spain String Competition.
Laura is an Antonio Brosa Award holder at the Royal College of Music where she is pursuing an Artist Diploma thanks to the generous support of the Drake Calleja Trust and the BritishSpanish Society, from whom she received a Banc Sabadell Foundation scholarship.
Domonkos Csabay
Based in the UK since 2015, pianist, accompanist, répetiteur and chamber musician Domonkos Csabay often performs a wide range of classical repertoire throughout the country. Besides winning several prizes in the recent two years e.g. the first prize of Brant International Piano Competition, he also gave successful performances including solo recitals and concertos with orchestras such as Birmingham Philharmonic or London’s Kew Sinfonia.
He has been on stage in several renowned concert venues in Birmingham such as Symphony Hall, Elgar Concert Hall, CBSO Centre, St Philip’s Cathedral and in London at St John’s Smith Square or Milton Court. In Birmingham’s venerable Town Hall he played on a pre-concert showcase before Paul Lewis’ performance in 2016 and two solo recitals including Schubert’s last piano sonatas on the programme. As a chamber musician, he performed alongside leading artists of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and was a guest performer on prestigious festivals such as Lichfield Festival and Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival.
